Automatic whole-home backup power on natural gas or propane. The Guardian® Series 22 kW is one of the most powerful air-cooled home standby generators Generac builds. Installed outside like a central air unit, it monitors your utility power around the clock, starts on its own within seconds of an outage, and hands the load back when grid power returns.

Frequently asked questions
What clearance is required from residential walls and windows?
Under Canadian codes and manufacturer installation guidelines, the generator must be positioned at least 18 inches (457 mm) from exterior non-combustible walls, and a minimum of 5 feet (1.5 m) from any operable window, door, fresh air intake, or dryer vent. Installation must follow CSA B149.1 by a licensed contractor.
What material is used for the outdoor weather enclosure?
The 22 kW models (70432 / 70422) feature an all-aluminum RhinoCoat powder-coated enclosure that provides corrosion protection against Ontario winter road salt, road spray, snow, and freezing rain.
Do I need a cold weather kit in Ontario?
A cold weather kit (thermostatically controlled battery warmer pad and oil filter slip-on heater) is recommended in regions where temperatures drop below -10 °C (14 °F) to ensure fast engine starting during freezing winter weather.
What engine oil is recommended for Canadian climates?
After the initial 25-hour break-in period, the Generac G-Force 999cc V-Twin engine should be serviced with fully synthetic 5W-30 oil for year-round Canadian climate operation (-29 °C to 40 °C).
How does the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) function during a power outage?
When grid power fails, the 200 A ATS senses the voltage loss, starts the generator engine, and transfers home electrical loads within 10 to 12 seconds. Once utility power returns stably for 30 consecutive seconds, it transfers back to the grid and runs a 1-minute engine cool-down cycle.
Can I monitor generator status on a smartphone?
Yes. Every Generac Guardian comes equipped with Mobile Link Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing homeowners to check generator status, battery voltage, exercise schedules, and maintenance alerts from an iOS/Android smartphone or web browser.
