Frequently asked questions
What size Hayward sand filter do I need for my Ontario pool?
Tank diameter depends on your pool volume and pump flow rate. The 18-inch S180T suits pools up to 16,800 gallons; the 21-inch S210T handles up to 21,120 gallons; the 24-inch S244T covers up to 29,760 gallons; the 27-inch S270T supports 35,520 gallons; and the 30-inch S310T handles large estate pools up to 47,040 gallons based on standard 8-hour turnover calculations.
Can I use recycled glass filter media instead of standard silica sand?
Yes. Hayward ProSeries sand filters are fully compatible with recycled glass filter media as well as standard #20 silica sand (0.45 to 0.55 mm). Glass media filters down to 5 to 9 microns (compared to 20 to 40 microns for silica sand) and requires approximately 20% less media by weight.
How do I winterize a Hayward ProSeries sand filter for Ontario winters?
To protect the tank lateral assembly against Ontario sub-zero freezing, remove the bottom drain plug and open the air relief valve to drain all water. Remove the pressure gauge and sight glass, then rotate the VariFlo valve handle to the "Winterize" setting (between active detent notches) to allow water to drain from the valve body.
How often does filter sand need to be replaced?
Under typical Ontario seasonal pool usage (May to September), standard #20 silica sand lasts 3 to 5 years before the sand grains become rounded and channelled. Recycled glass media typically lasts 8 to 10 years before requiring changeout.
