Before you buy
- Verify 24V thermostat wiring: Requires a dedicated common wire (C-wire) at your wall plate. If no C-wire exists, an optional ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK) must be wired at the furnace control board.
- Not compatible with 120V–240V high-voltage electric baseboard heaters without an external low-voltage line relay.
- Not compatible with standalone HVAC accessories (humidifiers, dehumidifiers, or ventilators) or dual-transformer heating and cooling configurations.
- Confirm 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage is active and available at the planned wall installation location.

Frequently asked questions
Does the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential require a C-wire?
Yes, continuous 24 VAC power is required. If your existing thermostat cable has only 4 wires and lacks a C-wire, an ecobee Power Extender Kit (sold separately) can be added at the furnace board without running new wall wiring.
Can this model control a whole-house humidifier or dehumidifier?
No. The Essential model does not include auxiliary accessory terminals (ACC). For whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier control, choose the ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced or ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium.
Is the Smart Thermostat Essential compatible with wireless SmartSensors?
The Essential model focuses on on-device temperature and humidity sensing. If room-by-room multi-sensor balancing is required, the Enhanced or Premium model is recommended.
Which smart home voice assistants work with this thermostat?
It integrates directly with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant through the ecobee app, allowing voice control via compatible smart speakers and mobile devices.
Does the thermostat continue operating if Wi-Fi disconnects?
Yes. Temperature control and programmed heating and cooling schedules continue running locally from internal memory during network interruptions.
